Chapter 1 “The Runaway”
1. What do you think this book is about? Well according to my opinions I think this book is going to be about that David runs away for awhile but eventually hes going to be back at the house.
2. Where is the setting? The setting of the chapter takes place in Daly City, California in the winter of 1970.
3. How old is David? David was 9 years old in the chapter.
4. What is David’s daily routine? David's daily routine is wake up from sleeping in an old army in the garage, perform the morning chores, eat leftover breakfast if he was lucky enough.
5. What is he forced to do when he got home from school? And why? When David gets home from school he was forced to throw up in the toilet bowl to prove he didnt steal anything at school.
6. Where does he sleep? David sleeps in an old army cot in the garage.
7. Why are weekends worst? Weekends were worse , because no school meant no food, and more beatings at home.
8. Who do his parents always argue about & why? Davids always argue when they're drunk, and they mostly argue about David. Father was probably defending David and he told the mother she doesn't treat him nice.
9. What is father job? Are you surprised? Father's job is a firefighter and Im surprised, because I cant believe he cant control the mother.
10. p. 8 What simile does he use to describe how he feels? The simile David used to describe himself was an insect that was going to get squashed soon.
11. p.10 how does David describe his mom’s eyes? David described his mother's eyes filled with hatred and was ice cold.

13. Why does David leave his house? Where does David go to? If you were him what would you do? David decided to leave the house, because this was his chance to get away from the misery. David planned to go to the Russian River but ended up going to a pizza bar that he had encountered. If I were with him, I would've just not go home at all.
14. Where does he feel safe, why? David feels safe in Geurnville.
15. What is going through his head while walking away? While he was walking he kept thinking whether he should go back or not and the fact that he deserved the beatings and how his mother is treating him.
16. Where does the police officer take him? The police officer took David to the police station.
17. Who is Mark and What does Mark give Dave? What do you think of mark? Mark was the cook of the pizza restaurant. Mark gave David a slice of pizza. I think Mark was nice enough to give him a morsel of food.
18. Who picks him up from the police station? And what does he tell the police the reason for Davids escape? David's father picked him up from the police station. He told the police officer that his mother was worried sick over him ever since he left.
