Chapter 4 “new Beginnings”
1. What did David fully realize about his mother after the effects of the trail had worn off? David finally realized that his mother could no longer harm him in any way after the effects of the trial had worn off.
2. Who was David now living with? David was now living in the home of Aunt Mary. His stay there was temporary until he was placed into a permanent foster home.
3. How is David adjusting to new life? David quickly became accustomed to the routine and his new school. Even though he knew he was free at Aunt Mary's home, he became lifeless and shy around his classmates.
4. Why the change in school? School was difficult for David to adjust. He had a hard time making friends. He stood out most of the time especially when they knew he didn't live with his parents.
5. What do you think his older foster brother meant by “our kind”? What was he warning him about? I think his older foster brother meant by "our kind" was that foster kids were different than kids that aren't in the foster care. He was warning David to not tell that he was a foster, because they might not like him.
6. Why didn’t David care that the bigger boys were only using him? David didn't care the fact that the bigger boys were only using him, because they were the only "friends" he had.
7. In what month was David put in his first foster home? The month when david was placed into his first fostor home was the first week of July.
8. What was his new foster mother’s name? David's new foster mother's name is Lilian Catanze.
9. Who was Ms. Gold talking about when she said David was to have no contact with them? Ms. Gold was talking about David's real family when she said David was to have no contact with them.
10. What do you think Ms. Gold meant by he’s a bit light fingered? What Ms. Gold meant by light fingered was that he gets a bit hyper and hes into everything.
11. What were the rules of the house? The rules of the house were that he was responsible for keeping the room clean, and helping out with the chores. He wasnt allowed to enter someone else's room without their permission. There is no lying and stealing allowed. If he wants to go somewhere, he has to ask Mrs. Catanze first and tell her where hes heading to and how long he'll be there.
12. Describe David’s new parents /family. Davids new parents/ family were really nice to him and he had more freedom than he ever had.
13. With a huge family, why does David still feel hollow? With a huge family, David still felt hollow, because he saw a couple sitting on the same table as what his mother and father had once sat on.
14. What did Larry Jr. say to David that made him mad and cry? Larry Jr. asked david questions like how did it feel to get kicked and beat up so bad, and didnt fight back when he got abused. His questions made David mad and cry at the same time.
15. How is Mom’s attitude when she visits David? Mother's attitude was relaxed when she had visited david, she still wouldnt talk to David though.
16. Why is he trying to earn money? David was trying to earn money so he could have enough money to get his bike fixed.
17. When does he finally feel like a normal kid, why? David finally feels like a normal kid, because then he can finally ride a bike and hear other kids have fun.

Chapter 3
- Aqueduct- n. a bridge like structure that carries a water conduit or canal across a valley or over a river
- Sentence- The aqueduct filled with water, helped the boat move through to get onto the other side.
- Verge- n. the edge, rim, or margin of something
- Sentence- The car collided on the verge side of the street which caused a severe accident.
- Pediatrician- n. a physician who specializes in pediatrics
- Sentence- When I was little, I always wanted to be a pediatrician or anything that serves in the medical field.
- Ramble- v. to wander around in a leisurely, aimless manner
- Sentence- My cousin was too shocked and depressed at what she heard so she rambled around the room.
- Unison- n. coincidence in pitch of two or more musical tones, voices, etc
- Sentence- Two Malaysian girls danced in unison at the First Salsa Dance Competition.
- Depressors- n. Any of various muscles that serve to draw down a part of the body.
- Sentence- The tongue inserted a toungue depressor on the patients tongue.
- Rehearsed- v. to practice (a musical composition, a play, a speech, etc.) in private prior to a public presentation
- Sentence- Two theater actors rehearsed their line during break time.
- Hypersonic- adj. noting or pertaining to speed that is at least five times that of sound in the same medium.
- Sentence- The hypersonic airplane soared through the air.
- Surge- n. a strong, wavelike, forward movement, rush, or sweep
- Sentence- The surge of the wave moved toward the house that was located on the beach.
- Nudged- v. to push slightly or gently, esp. with the elbow, to get someone's attention, prod someone into action, etc.
- Sentence- The duck nudged the fish that swam past through it.
- Astounded- tr. v To astonish and bewilder
- Sentence- The guy facial expression seem so astounded at what he saw on the internet.

Chapter 3
- Why does he feel like a traitor? David feels like a traitor, because he had spilled the family's secret of how his mother treated him and all the torture that took place in the house.
- What did Ms. Gold try to explain to Dave about the judge’s decision? Ms. Gold tried to explain to Dave about the judge's decision, because no child should get treated like how he got treated like by his mother.
- Describe what he saw right when he entered court. Right when David entered the courtroom, he first saw his mother and his brothers.
- What would Ms Gold like David to do? Ms. Gold wanted David to tell the judge the truth to every question that is going to be asked him.
- Who did Dave write a letter to? David wrote a letter to his mother.
- What did that letter say? The letter quoted, " To mother, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for it to come to this. I didn't mean to tell the secret. I didn't mean to hurt the family. Can you forgive me? Your son David.
- What did Dave say to Ms. Gold when he tapped her hand? David apologized to Ms. Gold when he tapped her hand. David apologized for all the trouble he had caused her.
- Why do you think David’s mom didn’t say anything when the judge asked her if she had any statements? I think the reason why the mother didn't have any statements for the judge was because she was guilty of the case.
- Why does he have so much trouble deciding what to do, explain the 2 sides. David had troubles deciding what to decide, because he imagined himself going back to his mother or being free and away from her, living like a normal kid again.
- What did the judge ask David? The judge asked David if he would like to become a permanent ward of the court or return and reside with his mother at his former home.
- What did David blurt out to the judge? David blurted out to the judge that he finally wanted to become a permanent ward of the court.
- What significant thing made David realize he wants to be he courts’? David realized he wanted to become a permanent ward of the court, was because so he would be away from all the beatings.
- What did Dave’s mother say to him and what did she give him after thy left the court house? Mother told David to be a good bye and told him to have a good happy life, and then after that she gave him some new clothes.
- When David waived good bye who was the only person to return his gesture? When David waived goodbye the only person who returned his gesture was his mother.
- What do you think about mom’s reaction after the judges decision? After the judge's decision mother didn't show any reactions or emotions at all, but she started to cry later on in the chapter. In my own opinion I didn't think she meant to cry at all.

Sentence: I intervened between my cousin and her boyfriend, because she was so stupid for being with him in the first place.
Poised- adj. being in balance or equilibrium
Sentence: Models are poised whenever or wherever they are, because they got used to it.
Saluted-v. Military. to pay respect to or honor by some formal act, as by raising the right hand to the side of the headgear, presenting arms, firing cannon, dipping colors, etc
Sentence- I saluted the officer when he passed by as a sign to show respect.
Surge- n. the swelling and rolling sea
Sentence- The surge crashed against the rocky coast.
Snide- n. derogatory in a nasty, insinuating manner: snide remarks about his boss.
Sentence-My co-workers made snide comments about my boss, because she was so mean and strict.
Frolicking- v. to gambol merrily; to play in a frisky, light-spirited manner; romp
Sentence- The children were frolicking in the snow
Rancid- adj. having a rank, unpleasant, stale smell or taste, as through decomposition, esp. of fats or oils
Sentence- My cousin would always watch her weight, so her taste became so rancid everytime her tongue touches any kind of oil or fats.

Sentence- One thing I learned in dance class was to mid stride.

Sentence- I pried into my work so I can make sure everything was right.

Sentence- He deserted his wife, because she had attitude and he couldn't take it anymore.

Sentence- The comedian made a pleasantries on the audience.

Sentence- My friends boyfriend retracted everything he had said to her.

Chapter 2 An Angel Named Gold
1. What was the date he finally got his prayers answered? March 5, 1973 was the date when David;s prayers were finally answered.
2. What happened that day? That was the day when he finally got rescued after his long long misery living in " the house". The teachers and staff at his elementary school intervened and notified the police.
3. What was the truth about him? The truth that the teachers finally realized is why he was so different from the other children, why he smelled so bad, why he was dressed in rags, why he climbed in trash cans in search of food.
4. Who did Dave not get a chance to say good bye to? How did he feel about that? David didn't get a chance to say good bye to his English teacher Mrs. Woodworth.
5. Where did the officer drive David to? The police officer drove David to the county hospital.
6. What did the doctor recommend for Dave to get? The doctor gave David cream for his skin. The doctor also recommended that David gets plenty of food, and some time in the sun.
7. What did mom program into Davids head? Mom programmed into David's head that he was going to jail with other bad children like him.
8. When did he realize he was safe? David realized he was safe when both the police officer and the doctor told him that he was going to never get hurt again.
9. Where is his new home? Describe it His new home looked so beautiful to David. It looked like a giant log cabin with lots of open windows with a huge backyard with a tiny creek.
10. What was his reaction in being in A FOSTER HOUSE? David had never heard of such word before, but he knew or thought he was going to love it.
11. How did he react when aunt Mary grabbed his arm? David got scared when Aunt Mary grabbed his arms so he covered his face, and his knees began to shake.
12. What does David dream about? Do you think he will get over it? Davids dream was that he was in a long dark corridor and he saw a dark figure which then transformed into mother which then marched towards him.

Sentence: I didn't have much time to eat, so I only ate a morsel amount of the food I brought for work.

Sentence: My 4rth grade teacher was so meek.

Sentence: I timidly apologized to my mother.
Sarcastic- adj. of, pertaining to, or characterized by sarcasm
Sentence: I hated my classmate for always giving me a sarcastic look.

Chapter 1 “The Runaway”
1. What do you think this book is about? Well according to my opinions I think this book is going to be about that David runs away for awhile but eventually hes going to be back at the house.
2. Where is the setting? The setting of the chapter takes place in Daly City, California in the winter of 1970.
3. How old is David? David was 9 years old in the chapter.
4. What is David’s daily routine? David's daily routine is wake up from sleeping in an old army in the garage, perform the morning chores, eat leftover breakfast if he was lucky enough.
5. What is he forced to do when he got home from school? And why? When David gets home from school he was forced to throw up in the toilet bowl to prove he didnt steal anything at school.
6. Where does he sleep? David sleeps in an old army cot in the garage.
7. Why are weekends worst? Weekends were worse , because no school meant no food, and more beatings at home.
8. Who do his parents always argue about & why? Davids always argue when they're drunk, and they mostly argue about David. Father was probably defending David and he told the mother she doesn't treat him nice.
9. What is father job? Are you surprised? Father's job is a firefighter and Im surprised, because I cant believe he cant control the mother.
10. p. 8 What simile does he use to describe how he feels? The simile David used to describe himself was an insect that was going to get squashed soon.
